In 1891, Johannes Brahms had retired the previous year as a composer. Yet, when he heard clarinetist Richard Mühlfeld play the Mozart clarinet quintet in A major he decided to return to work and compose his own clarinet quintet…

The rest is history: Brahms’ clarinet quintet was an instant popular success and became one of the most beloved pieces of the whole chamber music repertoire.
